The short answer: most visitors from Europe, the UK, the US and Canada need only a valid passport, a return ticket and the free online C5 immigration and customs form. Norwegian citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Always confirm with Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) before you book, because rules can change.

Checklist for entering Jamaica: 1 passport valid for the whole stay, 2 free online C5 form, 3 return ticket and address, 4 customs rules

Your passport

  • It must be valid for your whole stay. Some airlines check for six months beyond your stay, so that is the safest choice.
  • Have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.

Do you need a visa?

  • No visa for short visits if you hold a passport from Norway, the rest of the Nordics and most of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada or most Commonwealth and CARICOM countries.
  • How long you can stay: usually up to 90 days. The officer stamps your leave-by date in your passport, and it can be shorter than 90 days, so check the stamp.
  • Some nationalities do need a visa, either before travel or at the airport. Check the official list at PICA.
  • Want to stay longer? Apply to PICA for an extension before your stamp runs out. Overstaying can mean a fine or arrest.
  • Coming to work, study or live? A tourist entry does not cover that. You need the right visa or work permit.

The C5 form: do this before you fly

  • Every arriving passenger must make an immigration and customs declaration, called the C5 form.
  • Fill it in online before you travel, on the official government site: enterjamaica.com.
  • It is free. Ignore websites that charge a fee to “process” your C5 form. They are not official.
  • Keep the confirmation on your phone for arrival.

What the immigration officer may ask for

  • Your return or onward ticket.
  • The address where you are staying (hotel booking or host’s address).
  • Proof you can pay for your stay, such as a bank card.

Customs: what not to bring

  • Cash: declare US$10,000 or more (or the same in other currencies) on your C5 form. You will also fill in a cross-border cash form and show where the money came from.
  • Food: meat and dairy products are not allowed in. They will be taken and destroyed.
  • Yellow fever: you need a vaccination certificate only if you are arriving from a country with a yellow fever risk. Coming direct from Norway, the UK or the US, you do not.

Before you go: quick checklist

  • Passport valid for the whole trip, with two blank pages
  • Visa checked on PICA (most European and North American visitors don’t need one)
  • C5 form completed online, free
  • Return ticket and accommodation address on your phone
  • Travel insurance
