Who He Was

Winston Hubert McIntosh was born on 19 October 1944 in Grange Hill, Westmoreland. A gifted guitarist and keyboard player, he was a founding member of The Wailers alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer.

The Journey

After leaving The Wailers in the mid-1970s, Tosh built a powerful solo career with albums such as Legalize It, Equal Rights, Bush Doctor and Mama Africa. In 1988 his album No Nuclear War won the Grammy for Best Reggae Recording. His life was cut short in 1987.

Essential Songs

“Equal Rights”, “Get Up, Stand Up”, “Downpressor Man”, “Legalize It”, “Johnny B. Goode”, “Stepping Razor”.

Why He Matters

Tosh never softened his message. He spoke openly against apartheid, injustice and oppression, often to the faces of those in power. His legacy reminds us that reggae was born as music with a conscience.
