Jamaica has a wide variety of culinary, influenced by the different cultures that have popuøated the Island. Some of the popular foods that you should try out when you visit would be:
- Jerk Chicken
This preparation uses many spices and some jerk sauce. Everything used on the meat is island-grown. Things such as scotch bonnet peppers, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pimento are rubbed on the meat to give it a mouthwatering flavor. The meat is then rotated over pimento wood, which cures in n the taste. Any meat can be done this way, but Jamaicans prefer chicken. The chicken in Jamaica, though, is different from what you will find in the United States. The chickens in Jamaica feed on local foods rather than imported grains, which make them taste a lot better.
- Ackee and Saltfish
This is a traditional Jamaican dish. It might take some time to get used to, but it tastes great. After having it for a while, it may become addictive. It resembles scrambled eggs, but it is a mixture of the local ackee fruit and codfish. Ackee is not an ordinary fruit as it is bland, but the sweet taste blends in well with the salty taste of the cod. When this is all combined with peppers and onions, it makes the perfect tasting dish for breakfast.
- The Patty.
Patty is a baked crust filled with meat. You can find them in many flavors as well. There is a patty stand in most tourist areas, and on the streets, they can be found everywhere. You can get them stuffed with chicken, beef, lobster, and even some for vegetarians.
Another food you should try in Jamaica is Escoviche. This is when fish is cooked using marinated vinegar and other onions and spices that will bring out a more pleasant taste. This food actually tastes much better than it sounds.
